How to Choose The right Dishwasher?

Wirecutter Best Dishwasher

When shopping for a dishwasher, there are a number of features that tend to give you better performance and longer life.

Perhaps one of the most important factors to consider when looking for the best dishwasher is a stainless steel tub. If you can afford a high price, a good option is a dishwasher with a stainless steel tub, as they speed up the drying process, dampen noise, and last longer than those plastic models.

It should also be borne in mind that a good option is those that have nylon-lined baskets since they tend to be less likely to wear out over time.

Many of the latest dishwasher models on the market are equipped with more advanced features, much more versatile than classic models with manual controls.

What types of dishwashers to choose?

Let’s start this guide with a quick overview of the types of equipment available.

  • Standard

A full-size dishwasher should be able to hold between 120 and 150 pieces of plates, silverware, pots, and pans, which equates to 12 people. You can also find larger models to meet your washing needs up to a maximum capacity of 15 people.

Obviously, if you wash more parts at the same time, the capacity may vary. The dimensions of a standard dishwasher are universal to fit under most work surfaces: approximately 85 x 60 x 60 cm (L x W x D).

  • Slim

There is also plenty of room in a slim dishwasher that can hold 90 to 100 pieces per cycle. It should have enough space to wash the dishes for a couple or a small family.

Its small size of 85 x 45 x 60 cm will allow you to install it even in small spaces or have more workspace around it.

  • Compact

It is a practical solution for a couple or a small family. These small appliances can be placed on a countertop as if they were portable dishwashers. Although they are small in size, they can hold up to 60 items.

They can also be found in the drawer dishwasher version, with the arrangement of two separate sliding doors that open one below the other, to allow access to the respective baskets.

The compact dishwasher dimensions are approximately 55 x 55 x 50 cm. It’s like having a large microwave oven in your kitchen. However, the prices are not proportional to the smaller size and some models cost as much as a standard size model.

  • Recessed

If you choose a built-in dishwasher, you will need to get a siding panel from your supplier so that the appliance matches the rest of the furniture in your kitchen.

This way, you will hide it from view. The control panel is located on the top inside of the appliance and the dimensions of the machine may be slightly smaller than those of a normal freestanding model, i.e. approximately 82 x 60 x 55 cm for a standard size machine and 82 x 45 x 55 cm for a slim version. You can also find some compact built-in dishwashers.

  • Semi-recessed

The semi-recessed models are similar to the recessed ones, but with one difference: the control panel is visible.

What are the benefits of washing in a dishwasher?

Dishes, glasses, pans, and cutlery are disinfected in the dishwasher and once you remove them, they will be cleaner than when you wash them by hand.

The high washing temperatures of the dishwasher, hotter than your hands can withstand, together with the effectiveness of the detergents for this type of appliance play an important role when it comes to obtaining excellent results.

However, although they can work miracles, they are not miracle machines. This is what you should do before using a dishwasher.

  • Embedded dirt

The action of the dishwasher cannot do much when there is encrusted dirt and burned parts in the pans.

To make the most of the appliance’s potential, it is recommended to remove stubborn impurities before placing dishes and pans in the baskets, as well as using the rinsing program if you do not want to do a complete wash for a while.

  • Sprinklers

Make sure the spray arms can swing freely and that tall or bulky dishes do not obstruct movement.

  • Tartar

If the water in the area where you live is particularly heavy, it could plug the holes in the sprinklers over time, rendering the appliance ineffective.

To avoid a build-up of scale that could damage the machine, add salt to the fabric softener when the light indicates that the level is low. With a cloth, clean the filter and door gasket after each use, otherwise, it may deteriorate and cause leakage.

Dishwasher Features

Take a look at the performance offered by these versatile appliances.

  • Programs

Most dishwashers offer a variety of programs to achieve optimal cleaning efficiency. It usually offers at least 3 programs: the main one, which operates at a temperature of 65 ° C, an ecological program for normal washing, and a gentle or delicate program.

The cycles additional vary slightly depending on the machine and may include a specific program for vessels or a half load option. Some models offer a rinse and hold function for a high level of soiling.

The more advanced models are usually equipped with sensors that are designed to adjust the type of program based on the load on the machine. This reduces or increases the amount of water or rinses needed depending on how dirty the dishes are.

However, some people think that too many options can be confusing. So look for features that make the machine easier to use, and keep in mind that special programs like “delicate” are only worth it if you use them frequently.

  • Delayed start

Sets the machine to start automatically after an interval of time. It is a useful option if you intend to turn on the appliance at night, while you sleep, and thus obtain a cheaper energy rate.

  • Baskets

The basic models offer fewer functions, but the best machines have adjustable or removable lower baskets and an upper basket that you can place at different heights, to make the most of mixed loads.

Each brand has its own way of moving the baskets. Some appliances use a clip system to reposition the upper basket, while others require the entire basket to be removed to place it at a different height.

You can also find dishwashers with tilting upper baskets, which will allow you to take advantage of every corner.

  • Hidden controls

Many recessed models have the control panel hidden on the top edge of the frame. It is the ideal solution if you are looking for a more elegant style for your kitchen.

  • Child safety lock

If there are children in the house, this is a must-have feature on your dishwasher. It will prevent the door from opening during any cycle.

  • Anti-flood device

Although hopefully you never have to use it, this option makes you feel more at ease.

For added protection, when shopping for a dishwasher, check that the inlet hose is equipped with a sensor that will stop the water supply in case of leaks.

Some machines detect changes in water pressure at the top of the suction tube and a safety valve removes the water.

  • Pre-rinse

This is a useful feature for rinsing dishes while waiting for a full load cycle.

  • Drying cycle

Standard-size dishwashers typically have a dry cycle. This function can be performed in two ways: the first is hot air drying, which is a more efficient drying method but uses a little more electricity.

In this case, there is an element that heats the air to dry the items in the dishwasher. The second method is the hot rinse: it consists of using the residual heat from the final rinse to dry the dishes.

  • Water sensor

It is responsible for modifying the amount of water used by controlling its degree of dirt as it is pumped out of the machine. The sensors identify when the dishes are clean and then automatically end the program, which translates into savings in water and electricity consumption.

  • Indicators for salts or rinse aid

These lights are typically found on the external front control panel or on the top edge of a recessed model. When they are turned on, a rinse aid or dishwasher salt must be added to the machine.

Rinse aid helps reduce drying and leaves dishes shiny and spot-free, while dishwasher salt makes waterless heavy.

  • Consumption

There are dishwashers that use less energy and water, so you can find models that are more environmentally friendly. In general, the more expensive the machine, the better the energy efficiency. Today, many models include sophisticated general power and energy-saving features.

  • Acoustic emission

In terms of noise level, dishwashers are one of the few appliances where manufacturers always disclose acoustic emissions in decibels. The quietest models are around 40 dB or even less.

  • Setting the water hardness level

To make sure your machine is running at its best, you will need to set the water hardness level (if applicable) under the salt plug.

This should only be done when purchasing the new machine or moving to an area where the water hardness is different.

You will need to contact your local water company to find out the hardness of the water. The manual that came with your appliance will provide more detailed instructions on how to change the level. Many brands provide helpful online video support to help solve common user problems.

What items should not be put in the dishwasher?

While a dishwasher makes your life a lot easier, keep in mind that there are some items and materials that, unfortunately, you will have to continue washing by hand.

These include aluminum cookware (including hard-anodized aluminum, nonstick, and melt coatings), as these materials react with detergent and tend to discolor.

Even cast iron pans should not be washed in the dishwasher, otherwise, they can rust. Also, avoid putting cutlery with bone, wood, pearl or plastic handles inside the machine, as they can break, swell and deform. And if you have porcelain or hand-painted antiques, never put them in the dishwasher if you don’t want them to discolor or break.

Beware of kitchen knives. Preferably wash them by hand to avoid the risk of being damaged by blows during washing.

What are the main dishwasher programs?

Most likely, you will not use more than two or three programs in your daily life. However, some cycles can be useful in some circumstances. Let’s see which are the most common and what they are for.

  • Automatic washing.

Automatic or smart washing uses sensors that regulate the cycle time and the amount of water depending on how dirty the load is.

  • Normal cycle.

It is ideal for everyday dishes and lightly soiled loads.

  • Intensive cycle.

Useful for cleaning dishwasher-safe pots and pans.

  • Quick wash.

A quick wash or rinse is only convenient when you don’t have enough dishes to complete a load.

  • Program for glasses.

Your glasses will be drier and without stains.

  • Sanitization cycle.

It kills bacteria and is great if someone has a cold at home.

  • SFBDelicate cycles.

Ideal for fragile or hand-washed items.

  • Half load cycle.

It is responsible for washing only a few items placed on the upper or lower rack.

Why are there different types of baskets?

If this is your first time buying a dishwasher, you will soon discover that not all baskets (that is, the shelves on which dirty dishes are placed) are the same. Some have a folding frame, others have an additional third-tier basket on top, and best of all, some have very tight spacing between teeth, while others offer more space for thick plates or specially rounded covers.

When you go shopping, slide the baskets in and out to make sure they are sturdy and move smoothly, and see how they fit together. If you trust online sales, you can read the opinions of those who have used this appliance for some time. See if the baskets can hold the objects you wash most often, even those that have a somewhat particular shape, such as certain types of cups and glasses.

Here are other aspects that we suggest you evaluate with special attention.

  • Folding baskets

Shelves of this type are ideal for stacking small cups and mini serving plates.

  • Folding grid

A collapsible rack allows you to create a flat space to place large bowls and pans.

  • Cupholder

The cup holder is a real panacea if you wash a lot of wine glasses. The safer the better!

  • Cutlery basket

Generally, two cutlery baskets of different capacities are offered, so you can choose the one that best suits the amount of cutlery you need to wash. If you put it in the upper basket, you will have more space at the bottom to place the pans.

How is the dishwasher tub made?

The two materials most used to make the dishwasher tub are stainless steel and plastic. Both can be durable, but we prefer stainless steel.

In the past, this material was reserved only for the most expensive models, but today, stainless steel tanks have become present in practically all machines except the most economical ones. Stainless steel retains heat, stays clean, and lasts forever. We think it is worth shelling out a little more.

Dishwasher design

In addition to the door that can be covered with a panel to match the kitchen decor, there are a number of details to take into account if you need to pay special attention to aesthetics.

  • Control Panel

On some models, the control panel is clearly visible, so you can see at a glance how long until the cycle ends, while on others, it is hidden to give a more elegant appearance.

  • Handles

The handles on the front are more likely to match other kitchen appliances, such as the refrigerator or oven. The handles of the built-in models are hidden and do not stand out in the kitchen decoration.

  • Finish

The finish can be in stainless steel, and some brands favor stainless steel tones in black, matte black, white, or bronze to add warmth and versatility. If you want to venture into something new, think about how the equipment will harmonize with the rest of the appliances in your kitchen.

And whatever you choose, don’t forget to ask if the door panel is fingerprint-proof. Many brands offer it and it is a feature that, if you choose it, you will not regret.

What is the energy classification?

Dishwashers are classified according to energy consumption and drying. This classification includes a series of levels ranging from the most efficient A +++ to G.

With the help of the energy label on each model, you can compare the different dishwasher options based on the amount of energy they consume and calculate approximately how much it will cost you each year when using it. In a dishwasher, energy consumption is almost entirely related to water consumption. The less water you use, the less energy you consume. The classification is usually different for washing and drying performance.

Choose an A-rated model for both, this way you will get good performance while taking care of the environment. Also, make sure your model has a “green” program that uses less energy and water.

Use the coldest setting possible for acceptable results and make sure the machine is fully charged each time you use it.

And since we’re on the eco-friendly side, try using phosphate-free, biodegradable dish detergents.

Dishwasher Maintenance

Disconnect the power supply before cleaning.

Clean the filters after each use, where food remains are trapped. Removing and rinsing them is a quick and easy task to do.

A warm, soapy dish soap solution should be used to clean the spray arms. Make sure that each spray arm’s inlet is free of food debris by running water through each hole and removing scale deposits with a needle.

Clean the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth and a dish soap solution. If you are not going to use the machine for some time, leave the door ajar to allow air to circulate and thus avoid unpleasant odors.

If your dishwasher is not working properly, check that the baskets are not overloaded, that nothing is obstructing the movement of the sprinklers, and that the filters are clean. From time to time, use a specially developed product to descale and freshen the machine. You can usually find a wide variety of this product on supermarket shelves.

Conclusion

Unless washing dishes by hand is relaxing for you, a dishwasher is something you can hardly give up. Make a good choice today and you will have a machine that will last much longer.

Don’t be tempted to choose a dishwasher based solely on price, as this is often a false saving and can cost you more in the long run. An inexpensive dishwasher can consume more water and electricity, take longer to wash dishes, and not offer the same cleaning performance as more expensive models. In order to save energy and water, we have chosen the Candy brand model. This model does not require pre-washing to guarantee the best results, even when its electricity and water consumption is energy class A +.
