The Instagram advice ecosystem is loud, confident, and frequently wrong. A lot of “growth tips” are recycled folklore that made sense in 2018, or never made sense at all, and following them costs you effort that could go toward things that actually work. Here are six of the most persistent myths, and what’s true instead.
Myth 1: Post as often as possible
More is not better. Posting daily with weak content trains the algorithm to expect low engagement from you, which caps your reach. Three strong posts beat seven mediocre ones. Quality and consistency matter; raw frequency for its own sake actively hurts.
Myth 2: Hashtags are dead / hashtags are everything
Both extremes are wrong. Hashtags no longer drive the flood of reach they once did, so stuffing 30 of them is pointless — but a handful of relevant, specific ones still help the algorithm categorize your content. Use a few well-chosen tags; don’t build your strategy on them, and don’t skip them entirely.
Myth 3: The algorithm is out to get you
The algorithm isn’t personal. It’s a distribution system optimizing for content people engage with. When your reach drops, it’s almost never a targeted punishment — it’s the system responding to signals. Treating it as an enemy leads to paranoid, unproductive decisions. Treating it as a system you can feed the right signals leads to growth.
Myth 4: Follower count is what matters
A large, disengaged following is worth less than a small, active one. The algorithm rewards engagement rate, not raw size, and so does your bank account if you’re selling anything. Chasing follower count over engagement optimizes the wrong number.
Myth 5: You have to post at one magic time
There’s no universal best time — only your audience’s active window, which lives in your own insights. Generic “post at 11 a.m.” advice is an average of millions of irrelevant accounts. Timing is a minor multiplier anyway; content quality dwarfs it.
Myth 6: Going viral is the goal
One viral post that brings followers who never engage again does little for a real account. Sustainable growth comes from consistent content that steadily converts the right people, not from lottery-ticket virality. Chasing viral moments is chasing noise.
What actually works
Strip away the myths and the real formula is unglamorous: strong content with a tight hook, posted consistently, built around engagement signals like saves and sends, aimed at a specific audience. For the distribution mechanics underneath all of that, this platform goes deeper. But most growth gains come from dropping the myths above and putting that energy where it counts.
